I hope all of you are enjoying your summer and time with family. This was one of my favorite sessions this summer. Of course, you can’t beat a family session at Trestles with the beautiful sage-scented walk from Christianitos Road, under the famous railroad trestles to the perfectly shaped waves of Uppers and Middles.

This session was for my very dear friend, Jennifer, her fabulous family and her sister’s family from Virginia. We had a lovely morning together and I didn’t want to leave this very special place.

I have so many wonderful summer sessions that I have been wanting to share but as many of you may know, we have been living on our boat and plan on extending our stay for another couple of weeks. It is the first time I have felt like I might want to have a laptop to be able to do some work away from home.

It has been heaven to be “unplugged” while we are on the water but it becomes unrealistic with our current situation. When we do finally change our lifestyle status to “live-aboard,” I can see where it would become a must to plug back in so that I can incorporate both worlds.

In the meantime, we are juggling a relaxing “Staycation” on the boat in Dana Point with work, commitments and getting the kids ready to go back to school in the fall. It’s worth it. As soon as I hit the deck on Pelican, my stress and expectations around who I need to be and what the kids need to be doing based on society’s standards all floats away. We have been exploring the harbor every day as if we were newcomers from a far-away port.

The kids have been fishing and surfing off the dinghy, paddling the surfboards around the harbor, catching crabs with a line, hook and cheese, and swimming in the ocean near the breakwater. It’s life on the water as usual, just as we hope to do for the rest of our lives.

I photographed another wonderful San Mateo family recently but this time it was a farewell session. They will be leaving our quiet beach town for wider pastures. It was so much fun to hang out with the four of them at two of their favorite beach spots here in San Clemente the other morning. I just hope that I get to see them all again someday!

So, finally the session with the Penta kids gelled after several near misses over the last few months. It could not have been a better day after all the wait and we had so much fun it was hard to leave. Trestles was in true form with extreme low tide, peeling waves, lush native vegetation on the beach and a perfect amount of cloud cover to ‘soft-box’ it all. What a gift.
