[photography] is fond memories

When I was just starting to read cursive writing I had a book that I remember so vividly to this day. It had a mix of typeset and cursive poems and stories. I was so excited that I could read the new type of writing that I started reading everything in sight. My favorite poem was by Robert Louis Stevenson and I poured over A Child’s Garden of Verses. Maliea recently received A Little Golden Book Collection of Stories by Eloise Wilkin from my sister which included The Swing. I was instantly taken back to being 7 and the joy that poem brought to my life.

The following images are from Serra Preschool. I have been pushing the kids on the swing a lot lately and everytime I see them I think of one of my favorite poems.

THE SWING by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside–

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown–
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

[life] is hibernation day

I was so lucky to help at Merrik’s preschool on one of the days they were learning about bears. All the kids showed up in their pjs and brought their bears to class with them. The bears ended up “sleeping over” at the school all weekend long.

Merrik is anxiously waiting to see how big a mess they made at the shool while he was at home. He also told me that he really missed his bear and when we had a thunderstorm pass through he wondered if his bear was scared.

They made bear claws at the science table and had pancakes for snack. I love preschool. Can I just keep him there forever?

[life] is getting ready for winter

The kids at Serra Preschool have been busy learning about the Spirit of the Season, snow, reindeer, Jolly Old St. Nick, gingerbread and sleigh bells. I helped out at Merrik’s school two days this week and was reminded how much I love the way the kids learn there. Their teacher, Ms. Fuller is always in top form: full of energy and always aware of opportunities to teach the kids how to be more engaged students.

[life] is a day at Merrik’s school

I love to go in to Merrik’s school and capture the joy and playfulness of the kids there. Of course I am supposed to be supervising them too so sometimes what makes for a great shot is not the safest or most appropriate behavior on the playground so I need to control myself (and the kids for that matter). Not that I am not paying attention at all. It’s just that the little climber that loves to get up in the trees where she’s not supposed to be always makes for a fantastic lighting and action opportunity.

On Merrik’s Thanksgiving Feast day I stayed after the feast was over to help clean up and chat with other parents. I was lucky enough to get some images that otherwise would have been taboo during school along with some other great images of the kids playing like they were supposed to. Oh sweet rule breaking moments.

[photography] is a feast day

Merrik had his first Thanksgiving feast at preschool this past week. After being out all week with the flu, he bounced back in time for the festive day. He was so excited to go back to school to see his friends that he was bouncing off the walls all morning.

When he got there they had a busy morning of mashing potatoes, shaking butter and designing bead necklaces, drums and arrows out of pasta, coffee cans and straws. After all the work was done they headed outside to rally in the usually way on the bikes, scooters, monkey bars and treehouse. There was also a Harvest Market where the kids could ’shop for’ fruit and vegetables and other harvest items.

It was such a great day for me to be there and see all the excitement and enthusiasm. Parents arrived just after noon to join in the feast of a fresh roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad, hot rolls and pie. It was an amazing spread all prepared right in the kitchen at school by the teacher, Miss Fuller and the moms at work that day.
