Awhile ago Jim and I had the wonderful opportunity to see Jake Shimabakuro in concert at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. His version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on YouTube made him wildly famous and he is now touring as a solo Uke player! So many wonderful opportunities come up for artists now because of YouTube. Here is one of his own songs that blew me away even though his covers of George Harrison, Queen and Bowie are phenomenal, his own songs have a lot of heart and really demonstrate his skill.
The story behind this song is fantastic. It’s titled “5 Dollars Unleaded.” It’s about he and his dad in the car. Every time they took a drive they would have to get gas and his dad would pull up and say “five dollars, unleaded.” The tempo of the song is based on the joy of driving with gas in the tank then it changes as the gas runs out and anxiety sets in as you are looking for the next gas station, then the glub, glub, glub of the gas going in and the joy returns. I just love it!!

I just had to post this image before we head out of town for the weekend. It is from Juliet’s birthday party at The Little Gym. The colors and light are very difficult to work with in their room but this one is exposed for the natural light coming through the windows and I just love it. I also love the little girl in the image. She had her picture taken by me before!

Merrik recently started begging me to have Ford and Frances over for a play date. I asked their mom, Amber, who is a great person and of course one of those awesome moms from Serra Preschool if we could get together. At the OK of Merrik we ended up stopping over at their house after school this week. Merrik was in heaven with the train tracks, trampoline and couch. I was in heaven with the little still lifes Amber had set up all over her house just for me and my camera and the delicious “spa lunch” that she prepared. [and Frances was clearly fascinated with my touch phone]

Merrik is growing up right before my eyes. I can’t believe how ‘old’ he looks in these frames. Thank goodness I have captured so many moments like this to go back through and remember how little he once was!

T-street is my beach. I know, I know, it’s your beach too. But, it’s the beach where I spent many summer days as a child. The beach where I spent 8 hours every day in the summer as a teenager. It’s the “town” beach in San Clemente and I didn’t spend time at the pier because, well, the pier was a bit seedy back then. And I didn’t spend time at Riviera because my house wasn’t right there: I lived on the “other side of the freeway.” So, T-street was my beach. Now there’s a new crew at t-street. I remember when summer days at T-street were just as crowded as the winter days are now. It’s pretty quiet there now.
