Awhile ago Jim and I had the wonderful opportunity to see Jake Shimabakuro in concert at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. His version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on YouTube made him wildly famous and he is now touring as a solo Uke player! So many wonderful opportunities come up for artists now because of YouTube. Here is one of his own songs that blew me away even though his covers of George Harrison, Queen and Bowie are phenomenal, his own songs have a lot of heart and really demonstrate his skill.
The story behind this song is fantastic. It’s titled “5 Dollars Unleaded.” It’s about he and his dad in the car. Every time they took a drive they would have to get gas and his dad would pull up and say “five dollars, unleaded.” The tempo of the song is based on the joy of driving with gas in the tank then it changes as the gas runs out and anxiety sets in as you are looking for the next gas station, then the glub, glub, glub of the gas going in and the joy returns. I just love it!!
