We visited the Jewel of the California Missions this weekend. It was a beautiful day and the kids loved just walking around the old ruins. I forget about it until I drive by once in awhile and then think of going to see it. Merrik and Maliea especially loved the koi ponds and the gift shop.

Merrik and I scouted an out of the way, rugged beach for a photo session the other day. It is located in San Clemente State Beach system and was the most perfect spot for this mom looking to set out on a new career path so she can have more time with her two adorable kids. Angelica drove all the way down from Los Angeles to meet me for a photo session and wanted to have her photographs taken at a special place that didn’t feel like Los Angeles.

We ended up spending Thanksgiving with my family this year for a change. It’s been awhile because we usually go to Coronado or the local mountains with Jim’s family. It was an easy and relaxing day. I made wild rice with cranberries and toasted pecans and a cold cauliflower salad with capers that sounds gross but was delicious.
In the morning the kids and I met my sisters and mom down at the beach trail and went for a walk. Merrik loves his cousin Rose and they play so well together. He actually loves to play with all his cousins even though they are all much older than him. He really looks up to them-especially his cousin Cameron who he hasn’t stopped talking about since he saw him last December in Portland.
We all gathered at my mom’s house. My mom and dad are in the same house that we all grew up in. It’s always surreal going over there and spending time seeing all the same cracks in the sidewalk as when I was a little girl. I love it there. Everyone settles in comfortably before and after the meal. We enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Merrik went to a classmates 5th birthday party that was planned out in detail by the birthday boy. From the running race to the pit stop with water and oranges, he wanted it to be like a real 10K for kids. They all had a blast and were exhausted after a full lap around the park, chin-ups, dinosaur passing and cone bulldozing. It was definitely a rad party for all.

I love to go in to Merrik’s school and capture the joy and playfulness of the kids there. Of course I am supposed to be supervising them too so sometimes what makes for a great shot is not the safest or most appropriate behavior on the playground so I need to control myself (and the kids for that matter). Not that I am not paying attention at all. It’s just that the little climber that loves to get up in the trees where she’s not supposed to be always makes for a fantastic lighting and action opportunity.
On Merrik’s Thanksgiving Feast day I stayed after the feast was over to help clean up and chat with other parents. I was lucky enough to get some images that otherwise would have been taboo during school along with some other great images of the kids playing like they were supposed to. Oh sweet rule breaking moments.

Merrik tagged along on my location scout today. He had to pee the whole time so I tried to encourage him to find a spot next to a bush. He loves to do it that way at home when there is an opportunity. However, I don’t know if it was the unstable cliffs or the dense native vegetation that made him run for the bathroom. I also had to carry him on my shoulders half of the time. Note to self: Merrik isn’t much help on a location scout but it sure was good to have him along anyway.
