[photography] is a day trip

A couple of weeks ago we spent the better part of a day with Rebecca Lacko and her awesome boys. I posted the photos from our outing and now Rebecca has written her side of the story with great info on making the visit to Dana Point Harbor work for you.

[life] is an expectant mom

My good friend, Jeanine, from college who originally inspired me to go into photography in the first place recently put out a call for gently used baby items for her friend Kelly. Kelly’s husband is in the Navy and will be deployed when she is to give birth so Jeanine thought it would be nice to throw her a baby shower. I jumped at the opportunity to visit Jeanine and her awesome family in Long Beach and take some items I don’t need any more to Kelly.

Their home was so much fun to do photography in so I begged her to do some family portraits soon. There is so much yummy life and texture there. I just love the feel of the neighborhood which is across from CSULB where we met. It is pastoral suburban and eclectic and so not like San Clemente.

Kelly received some fantastic staples and everyone had a great time hanging out in the heat that didn’t seem so bad with a nice glass of wine, good conversation and awesome baby sitters for Merrik and Maliea!

[life] is sailing Polynesia

So I took a look in the ol’ Log of the Sailing Vessel Pelican the other day and I noticed that on this day in history (2000) we were heading to Haapiti. One of the most amazing surf breaks and anchorages ever. We hit it on a day that was out of control outside the reef. Big, heaped up swells made the motor around Moorea slow going. But inside where we anchored it was unusually calm for that spot.

Moorea is a very special place for both Jim and me and Haapiti was one of the most adventurous, memorable and beautiful spots we visited while we were there; all told for about 3 weeks.

Here’s our log entry for the passage from Tahiti to Moorea:

1000 17º 30′ 10.6″S 149 º49′ 20.7″W …Meeting up with Condesa at the pass.
1100 17º 28′S 149º 49′ W …Through the pass. Beautiful day.
1253 17º 28′ 30″ S 149º 55′ 20″ W …Big seas on the nose. Wind on the nose but very light.
1409 17º 33′ 50.2″ S 149º 54′ 25.6″ W…Rough going. Big seas. I hope the pass isn’t closed out!
1525 17º 33′ 51.6″ S 149º 52′ 30.3″ W…Big seas on either side of the pass!! Hard to find it at first. Lined up range markers to get in. Surfed big wave through. 10′+ swell pushed us on in.

and here are a couple of shots showing the surf with Clark from Condesa on the wave in the foreground (on the left) and Jim on the wave in the background (on the right you can see his head with the huge wave looming over it).

The next image is one I took of Condesa at anchor nearby and the other is of our anchor sitting on the white sand and the shadow of our bow on the sand. We couldn’t get our anchor set at first so Clark dove down to push it into the sand. Finally one of my most popular images is one of the calm waters in the lagoon looking out toward the edge of the barrier reef. We were anchored in 8 feet of water and Pelican draws 6. We could see the bottom at night by the light of the moon.

[photography] is an awesome location

I have been racking my brain for some awesome new locations for my holiday “Short But Sweet” sessions. I usually choose a spot and settle in for a couple of hours in the morning and evening on two different days as you come with your family for your 20 min of fame. These sessions cost $75 and include a 5×7 digital file of your select or a $25 credit toward your purchase if you do prints or my custom designed cards through me.

I will also be offering “In A Nutshell” (30 min. mini sessions) discounted for this time of year. This is a short session at your home or location of your choice (I am dying to do something at a laundromat or funky part of town-anyone?) and one 5×7 digital file for your holiday cards. Pricing and details to come.

I know many of you are already thinking about your holiday portraits as I have been asked by several people recenlty when I am going to start scheduling these. I just did a full session down at Cotton’s for a family visiting from Illinois who wanted to capture “A California Summer.” They are already ordering their Christmas card prints!

November is a great month for photography in San Clemente but I am also considering doing a day of “Short But Sweet” sessions in September or October. I would love to get comments from all of you regarding location ideas and whether you would be interested in a Sept/Oct session date.

Some new locations I have thought of doing the sessions at that would be different than the usual San Clemente Pier location. Let me know what you think!!

Trestles trail (a bit of a walk)
Trails or San Onofre (entry fee required)
Calafia
The ridgeline trail above Salvador
Ole Hanson Beach Club
The Beach Trail walking bridge

[photography + life] is a picture of my two babes

While I was taking a picture of a wicker trunk this morning that I want to sell, Maliea climbed up in the rocking chair in our master bedroom. Of course, as soon as Merrik saw her there, he followed suit. Maliea was in that chair so happy by herself but Merrik jumped in and squeezed her over and said, “Take our picture, mommy!” I couldn’t resist.

He looked through the frames on the camera’s screen and said, “There’s one with both of us and I’m smiling!” Then he posed himself behind Maliea and said, “Here let’s do it this way with my head over Maliea’s!” My little art director.
