I have three consecutive ongoing projects that are based around my current photographic and personal explorations. One of the projects is my series Pierside which is inspired by my constantly changing view of our local pier.
The San Clemente pier was a place we just did not go when I was growing up. There was a lot of seedy dealings happening in the “bowl” area and it was where all the marines hung out on leave. If you didn’t enjoy the overt attention from them, then you just stayed away.
Currently, the San Clemente pier is a vibrant, eclectic gathering place for all types of visitors: the see and be seen surf crowd, moms who like the nearby amenities of food, bathrooms, showers and swings, tourists from near and far, and locals who enjoy the spectacle of it all.
The pier has become a meeting place for my family-especially in the winter months. It is a place for me where my mind can reach out into the ocean without taking my kids away from their grandparents. The solid wood construction symbolizes the safety of being grounded and attached to the land while still being able to get out over the sea to watch the undulating swell pass beneath you.
