[life] is our backyard

After a busy day in the ocean the kids still had enough energy to goof off in the buckets of water in the backyard. It is an unusual backyard for a kid to grow up in but we are starting to get it worked out.

Ever since we put the “sidewalk” in, we now have a lot more room for Merrik and Maliea to roam. But we won’t ever have one of those high wooden play sets. Could you imagine?

Everyone wonders if we worry about them plunging themselves off the cliff because we have no fence around our “infinity” patio. However, I have never once seen the kids attempt to jump down the bank.
I wonder what they think about having such a wide open view of our town. We can sit up here and watch everything going on without having to get in the hordes or traffic.

[life] is the taste of salt water

I had a revelation today. I experienced the ocean with my son for the first time. I mean really experienced it like I like to experience it. Not from the water’s edge with my feet planted on the sand and the waves lapping at my ankles. But like I remember discovering the ocean-over the tops of wave crests and under the crash of the foam.

My revelation is that I am starting to see myself back in that world again-sooner than expected. I have had no expectations for Merrik’s bond with the sea but hoped that if I didn’t push it too much he would naturally choose to love it-just for the sake of familiarity. Our lives revolve around the sea and the hopes to someday soon sail the ocean blue but you can’t force your child to love something that you want.

In the morning we headed out to Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor where we spent a couple of hours practicing paddling and standing on a surfboard. I got a great workout pushing him fast through the water then chasing after him in waist deep resistance and then paddling around with him.

Then in the afternoon, I saw excitement in his face just as I remember when I was about his age. That thrill of floating up and over the “huge” swells and looking down the face of the wave as you reach the crest. When I did it at 4 I am sure the waves were the same size as today-1-3 feet-but the feeling is the same as when I go over a 6-8 foot crest now-exhilaration.

At first I was hesitant to take him out. It was high tide and the waves were shore breaking. He was so confident and adamant about going out far that I couldn’t resist. At first we just went out for a swim-past the shore breakers and rocky bottom to where neither one of us could touch. When the sets came rolling through he did fantastic. I am sure mostly it was being naive to the dangers but Merrik is not one to venture into things blindly. We talked about rip currents, never turning your back to the waves and watching the shore to stay aware of your drift.

Then we took the Boogie board out and we talked about never letting go of it, the face and shoulder of the waves and committing to ride one or deciding to turn and paddle up and over it as fast as you can before it pitches you over the falls.

I have the taste of surfing in my mouth again. At least I know that getting into the depths of the ocean is upon me. I am so goddamn sick of standing on the beach with just my toes getting wet! I may as well have been living by a lake.

[photography] is life

I was recently featured in an article by the amazing Rebecca Jane Lacko, LA Parenting Examiner.

She also writes a Green Living column so check that out too. Her articles are smart, informative and clever.

Plus, I am looking forward to doing some more collaborative projects with her!

[life] is a new friend

While Jim was swimming his events in the SPMA Long Course Championships, M&M and I stayed back at our hotel to keep cool in the pool. Merrik immediately made a new friend and ended up swimming non-stop with Harrison for 5 hours. They jumped and jumped into the deep end and swam and swam.

He was also invited impromptu to Harrison’s Spiderman themed Fourth Birthday celebration.

[life] mini minnows seashore day

On one of the Mini Minnows camp days they did a seashore theme and the kids hunted for crabs. They had string with a little wire box at the end where they put small pieces of hot dog to lure the crabs. A flood of memories poured into my mind as I watched Merrik climbing on the rocks tossing his line out and waiting.

When I was a young girl I spent hours climbing out on the rocks and walking the wall footings in Dana Point Harbor hunting for crabs. It makes me smile that my son can experience the same joys of freedom in the same beautiful harbor.

I practically grew up in Dana Point Harbor versus San Clemente. My family spent every weekend in the summer on our sailboat docked there. It was our ‘camping.’ This must be why I prefer the clean form of camping out. Even when I was doing a lot of mountaineering I preferred the snow camps and camps above treeline where there was no dirt!

Funny how I can be so adventurous but still prefer to be clean. I don’t even mind the layer of saltwater on my skin after a good sail. I’m just not into hanging out in the dirt. Merrik is well on his way with the same attitude.

[photography] bye high surf

We had a huge swell hit our beaches this weekend and of course we were on our way to Thousand Oaks. It never fails. Whenever there is an amazing swell, Jim either has a swim meet or a pending project that forces him to work long hours or on the weekend.

This time I had a hard time leaving the beauty and awe of a gorgeous swell too. Usually I am completely unphased by such an event but it has been so long since we’ve seen any waves around here I was dying to soak up their energy just by observation. I am by no means in any shape to surf 3 foot surf so the thought of getting in the ocean with a decent swell didn’t even cross my mind. I do miss those days when I could just grab my board and go out for a water session for who knows how long but that lifestyle is years away for my right now. I’ve got other amazing things to do!

I had only a few minutes to see the waves crashing. Between getting the oil changed in the car, packing for the weekend and picking up Merrik at camp, all I could do to capture any kind of images of this amazing spectacle was to shoot them from the beach while I waited for Merrik to be finished with his Merry Un-Birthday camp day with Mini Minnows.
