misconceptions

I have been studying a book titled ‘Digital Foundations-Intro to Media Design‘ by Xtine Burrough & Michael Mandiberg to prepare for the Digital Foundations class I will be teaching at CSUF this semester. I am completely redoing the curriculum for my course based on this book which is a huge change from my past textbook. I am refreshed and inspired by the new approach to this Communications course so hopefully Xtine’s completely different viewpoint on digital media will open my eyes to this aspect of my ‘work’ in a whole new way.

our house leaks like, well, a boat

I guess it’s blue water cruising in training at our house. Once again we had water damage. This time it was in the art room. The room where all my photographs, family photos, Jim’s paintings, the vintage poster collection and all our art supplies are kept.
Yesterday, at about 10am, I had diapers in the washing machine and put it on rinse when it filled and filled and filled spilling out into the art room for a good 20 minutes I suspect.
Thank God I was home and walked past the doorway when I noticed that Tiki was hesitant to go in where his food was floating around the room. The room was about 5/8 inch deep with water reaching across to 3 of the 4 walls. I screamed in disbelief then called the Flood Pros to come and help assess the damage. In the meantime, I swept gallons of water out the door into the garage and had help from my friend Aggelige drying up the rest with towels.
Now, that room is a disaster with artwork, posters, flat files, everything stacked willy nilly to the ceiling and here and there. The house is roaring at 120 deafening decibals (comparable to a jet engine) and we are headed to the Dana Point Marina Inn to regain our peace and quiet and our sanity for the next 3 nights. Last night was the creepiest night of my life ever with the roar of the fans and heaters and the nauseating sweet smell of the equipment (?).

a second generation of trouble

On Wednesday, Maureen, my friend from grade school invited us over to their awesome pool. Maureen and I have known each other since 3rd grade. We got into all kinds of fun ‘trouble’ off and on throughout the years. We spent a lot of time playing in the surf at the beach near her house in Cypress Shore. Now, my son and her son are on the path to having as much fun as we did. Even our girls Annalise (13 months) and Maliea (9 months) looked like they were up to no good.
Shane is an amazing swimmer. Only a couple months older than Merrik, he is already swimming his strokes in perfect form across the entire length of the pool. He knows freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and is learning the butterfly kick. I know Merrik can swim with big arms and eyes down but he just doesn’t care about doing it. Shane really wants to do it. He loves his instructors and being in the pool.
While we were there, Shane’s dad came home from Washington D.C. He had just been at the Inauguration and was happy to be back in warm weather.

merrik never ceases to amaze

Merrik continues his amazing maturation. I don’t know if it’s first born syndrome, new big brother traits, personality or what but Merrik just seems to be growing up so fast. There are certain things that have blown me away and that I never expected as a parent.
I wasn’t even going to start talking about potty training until he was 3 and I absolutely dreaded the process. He pretty much potty trained himself at 2 and hasn’t worn a diaper at night in months. I never dreamed it would be so easy. His process hasn’t been perfect but it’s worked.
He nursed every hour all night long in our bed until he was 2 so I thought going to sleep and sleeping on his own would never happen. However, the other night he came home from Nana Papa’s and he told me he was tired and ready for bed. I fed him some dinner, put on his jammies and he went in his room, laid down in his whale bed, rolled over, closed his eyes and went to sleep. I was blown away. He has been doing this more frequently. He really knows what he needs [and wants!]. He’s only 3 years old!
It makes my life so much easier but I already miss my little guy.
These aren’t the only things that amaze me about him, of course. I just have to say that all you parents out there just need to do what you feel is best for you, your child and your family rather than listen to friends or follow the parenting books. Trust your instincts and everything will be just fine.

blurb

I have been laying out a fine art monograph of my images of Polynesia using Blurb’s Booksmart. I am curious about the printing quality so I have created a book about our trip to Portland last December to share with Merrik and Maliea’s cousins, Holley and Cameron. Check out the book here to see what I created. I can help any of you with a book like this using your own images or images I have taken of your family. Just let me know!

textures

I have been playing with some fun Creative Commons textures in Photoshop from Essence of a Dream. Here are two different images with the same texture used two different ways. I like them because they are fun but I don’t like them because they are so trendy. I am trying to figure out a way to incorporate them into my photography in a subtle way that still creates a beautiful look without being overdone.
