merrik has been pouring over every toy catalog that enters the house. of course he wants one or more items on each page but he says, “I want that for my birthday, I want that for my birthday, I want that for my birthday” I assume because he doesn’t remember christmas.
anyway, his top picks so far are a toy vacuum and cleaning cart, a red drum set, a ride on train with signal, a shopping cart and a green trash truck. when I ask him what he wants for christmas he says “a blue christmas tree with blue lights” (he LOVES blue), “a dinosaur dumptruck” and “I really want an Oswald toy.” Well, wouldn’t you know that my son’s favorite show has no merchandising whatsoever. So, the only Oswald “toy” that exists is a rare $350 stuffed Oswald the blue octopus by Gund on eBay.

so merrik is on this kick of asking me “what is” lately. it’s a fun game in the car to pass the time and I enjoy coming up with good descriptions that would make sense to him.
well today we were talking about rain due to the coming storm, and snow due to the coming winter months etc. so he asked a series of questions and finally asked “what is winter time?” and after a few moments, “what is time, mom?”
love it! we talked about time and seasons and how things happen and people change and grow and how we use time to keep track of it.

We went to the San Juan Capistrano Depot last week for lunch. merrik requests the restaurant there all the time because he loves to watch the trains go by. you would think that it was christmas every time one stopped. he sits quietly and seriously as the people board then chases them as fast as he can go alongside the track. I thought for sure he’d chase the Amtrak Surfliner all the way to San Diego.
