thought: beach and bay

We had a fabulous weekend in Coronado. It all started Friday afternoon when Merrik, Maliea and I took the Amtrak out of San Juan Capistrano. We rode the 5:23pm train and it was standing room only! Unbelievable. I’ve never seen so many people having so much fun trying to get to their destination. No traffic, no seatbelts, no designated drivers. What a way to travel.

One nice gentleman gave up his seat to us when he saw me draped with kids and one on the verge of hunger screams. So I ended up sitting down and nursing Maliea with Merrik on the footrest in front of me. We were next to a guy with a box full of files on his lap with a laptop on top of that and a rolling cart in front of him on the floor. He said he commutes like that every day from Santa Ana to Oceanside. He was a lawyer so when he got off in Oceanside he piled his file box, laptop and 5 or 6 4″ binders on top of the cart and rolled his trunk full of office work down the stairs and off the train.

We lucked out and had two seats together for the rest of the trip.

The weekend continued on with easy and fun adjustments to norm. Maliea ended up sleeping on the floor because we decided it was better that Jim come down early the next morning to miss the traffic. That way he could get a good nights rest before the fun began.

Saturday morning we all hopped in the Bayliner and Jim and Merrik dropped Maliea, me, Gramma and Grampa off at the Coronado Yacht Club to hop on Pelican and motor her down to the house. It was a gorgeous morning and super calm on the water. We arrived at the house and dropped anchor.

By the afternoon everyone was playing in the bay just off the dock at the house and swimming, rowing and paddling out to Pelican who was now anchored just 50′ away. Merrik was on overdrive trying to keep up with James, Macole (Nicole) and her friend Karly who are at least 6 years older than him. He finally crashed at 5:00pm and didn’t wake until the next morning.

On Sunday Jim, Jeff and I set out to IB for a surf session. My first session since I got pregnant with Maliea. Thank goodness it was small. It was beautiful out and the waves were a blast. I caught several excellent waves and had a fantastic time.

That afternoon everyone was scattered about the bay wake-boarding or napping on Pelican. So, Maliea and I went on a wonderful walk around the Cays. After Merrik woke from his nap we headed to the beach across the strand. Nicole, Karly and Merrik had a fabulous time splashing in the small waves, playing in the glistening sand at low tide and beachcombing for sand dollars.

Monday morning we all hopped aboard the Bayliner (“Baby Boat”), after mom and dad slept in with Maliea, and took a cruise around The Big Bay. We visited all the buoys where the sea lions were napping and found a bait dock covered with cormorants, pelicans, seagulls and sea lions. It was fun watching the interaction amongst the marine life. Then we headed out to Ralph’s Flats where the surf breaks on the reef off Point Loma. There were a few surfers out but the waves needed a little more size to make them rideable. It would be a blast to anchor the Bayliner out there and go surfing sometime!

Believe it or not, I didn’t take one photo all weekend but did capture everything on video which I am making into a little movie and will post when it’s done.
