I’ve been so depressed and stressed over the whole economy thing (imagining myself shooting rabbits in our backyard to feed the kids, wondering if I should stock up on Campbells soup, TP [oh, yeah we can always use leaves] and toothpaste). I needed a good laugh so here’s what helped me cheer up today.

Every once in awhile I allow myself snippets of time to read thought provoking articles from sources that are important to me. I used to subscribe to Orion magazine because of it’s intelligent articles, environmental slant and beautiful artwork. Now I just get their emails but I feel better about not seeing a years worth of magazines piled up in our TV room that have never been read.
I came across this article while I was trying to track down some replacement frames for my husbands broken sunglasses that hold newly replaced prescription lenses.
And then I overheard a conversation on the playground. One child said, “I know why it’s hot. Do you?”
Another said, “It’s because the Earth is sick.” They all nodded. I said nothing.
The article is titled The Big Talk: How to tell a six year old where all the birds and bees have gone
by Sandra Steingraber.

If you want to get beyond taking snapshots and consider yourself a true photographer, a good place to start is understanding composition. Consider these questions as a part of your learning process toward becoming a photographer who “composes” images rather than just takes pictures:
1. Define the term composition. (4 points)
2. Name and define two major elements of composition. (4 points)
3. Explain and illustrate the Rule of Thirds. (4 points)
4. Describe how the mood or feeling of a photo can be conveyed through the use of composition lines. Use two examples of composition lines. (4 points)
5. Describe how color can be used to emphasize the main subject in a photograph. Use two colors as examples. (4 points)
Stay tuned for the answers!

We went to the SC Open this past weekend so Merrik could see the little groms riding and surfing. He was so excited to take his skateboard to the skate park but when we got there he was completely overwhelmed with the kids riding all over the place. I think he had more fun watching the kids skate outside the park than he did watching the kids ride in the competition.
The surf contest was at the pier on Sunday so we stopped by to watch before heading to the New Disneyland. It was very cool to see all the groms riding their little boards in on these cute little waves.
